It was with great honor and humility I joined the family of St. Mary’s Catholic School. The junior high math position opened up just as I was preparing to return to the classroom. This timing I truly feel was God’s timing, and my “hint” that this was the place I was supposed to be. I will continue to teach JH Math for SMCS for the 2024-2025 school year.
I grew up in Aquilla, TX and moved to West Middle School in 6th grade. I graduated from West High School in 2000 and then headed to MCC for a year. During that year (as a Zoology major thinking I would go into Veterinary Medicine), I was approached to coach basketball and track for SMCS. This experience changed the direction of my life. I loved coaching and getting to know the girls. I moved to College Station and attended Texas A&M University continuing my Zoology major, but after another year I decided to change my major to Mathematics and pursue a career teaching and coaching. I graduated in May 2005 with a BA degree in Mathematics and coaching minor from TAMU. My first-year teaching and coaching was for Kennedale High School. The following summer I got engaged to my high school sweetheart, Justin Slovak. He had gotten a job in Magnolia, so I joined him at Magnolia JH for one year, then returned to the high school level at Magnolia West High School. We were married in 2007 here at St. Mary’s Church of the Assumption. I taught 9 years with Magnolia ISD and joined the Lone Star College System teaching night classes in 2013.
In 2015, I got out of public education and had a short career in real estate (until we moved in 2017), all the while continuing to teach online for LSCS. We were blessed with our daughter in 2016, then almost a year later found out we were pregnant a second time with our son. At this point we decided to move home to be with family. I stayed home with my son for his first year, and I took on teaching a class at Hill College. In September 2019 we became parents to 3 children under the age of 3 as we welcomed our youngest daughter.
I was born and raised in the Baptist Church but converted to Catholicism my freshman year of high school. The opportunity to teach the WHOLE child is something I am so excited about.
In the little spare time I have with small children, I love to travel and read. I am so grateful to be a part of the St. Mary’s family!
